This month we have 5 exciting projects on the docket. Check them out below and be an informed voter when the applicants make their presentations this sunday, Feb. 27, at 6pm.
As always soup will be provided, but it would be a delight if you brought a dish to pass and your own bowl / cutlery. See you on Sunday!
The projects, in order of submission:
"Food Stamp Vegetarianism" Workbook by Lena Judith Drake
"I am in the process of creating a short book. The goal of this book is to enable low-income people and/or people receiving Michigan's Food Assistance Program support to eat a nutritionally complete vegetarian diet on a small budget. The book adheres to government guidelines for healthy adults daily nutritional needs, and calculates the food stamp budget using the actual amount an individual with no income would receive. It is written in accessible language. The book will include "worksheets" for picking preferred food items under budget, as well as suggested, wholesome recipes for each month."

Grand Rapids Comic Society zine production
"The Grand Rapids Comics Society is a cadre of West Michigan cartoonists, illustrators, writers, and those passionate about creating an exploring various genres of comic art. Over the past two years we have had many ups and downs, but have ultimately developed into a focused and creative group wanting to advance in our art. We are currently working on two publications: a mini-zine and a more extensive and professional anthology. The mini-zine is our top priority at present because it is cheaper and is easier to put together in a timely fashion. We are almost ready for printing but need funding. Since all of us are either workng as artists or still in school its difficult to shell out the mass printing prices. Even though each book is less than a dollar each, printing centers require a MINIMUM amount, which is usually between $50 and $200."

Barefoot Victory Garden
"The Barefoot Victory Garden is the dream of a bunch of friends to get our hands dirty, eat our own food, and to be in community with our neighborhood. We started last year with just an empty plot of land situated on Wealthy Street near Giddings. From that desolate lot, we toiled away building up beds, bringing in rich dirt, and tending the rich variety of vegetables, herbs, and flowers that grew from the seeds we planted. This is not a normal plant your own plot community garden but rather a garden where we all work together to grow and enjoy the food.
Once the garden was underway, we began having community meals for friends and the neighborhood right in the middle of the garden with music and food for all. We also held a kids camp in the summer to teach neighborhood kids the importance of eating healthy and the value to be found in growing your own food.
Near the end of our first growing season, we discovered that the Barefoot Victory Garden had been nominated for the 21st annual Neighborhood Business Award in the category of Best Non-Profit Community Project."

GVSU BFAs
"We (7 bfa students) are planning an open studio event that will include our senior thesis exhibition(s). The event will be held at the 1111 Godfrey building.
So far there will be 5 shows that include:
-3 BFA exhibitions
-Tim Fisher's Advanced Drawing Class
-GVSU group show (BA's & other bfa students working towards their degree)
In addition we are looking to have the other existing residents open up their studio's for the event.
To attract a large crowd we will be holding the event on Friday April 15th, which is the same night as Art Downtown in the Heartside. Because there will be a lot to see that night, we are considering an extension of the public showings to include Saturday night so everyone can take their time to enjoy visiting all the open venues.
The BFA's that will be showing include:
-Krista Awad (painting) & Chris McClure (sculpture)
-Meghan Kelly (ceramics & art ed), Megan Oswalt (Visual Studies), & Stephanie Voelck(art ed)
-Julia Victor (painting) & Mike Wolf (Visual Studies)"

LowGear: an Auto Enthusiast Web Production
"LowGear is a web-based show aimed at highlighting and depicting your every day, run of the mill vehicles. There are other shows out there that profile super cars and do events that cost millions of dollars, however this is not one of them. We understand you can't just go out and purchase a new Bugatti Veyron. This show will demonstrate the positives, and negatives, of cheap, affordable vehicles. We will also have fun and crazy challenges each week. The idea of the show is to create an informative yet enlightening platform to help people decide which vehicle is right for them."
